E-Waste represents end-of-life electronic and electrical equipment waste, a rapidly growing stream of solid waste due mainly to high rates of consumption, short life spans of devices, product obsolescence, technological and software upgrades. E-waste is a valuable resource of gold, copper, silver, platinum, palladium and rare earth elements etc.
Key challenges facing e-waste recycling include a continuously evolving waste composition, the presence of hazardous components especially in printed circuit boards, complexity and toxic emissions. It is a common practice to recover materials in the cheapest way possible, and to dispose of residual materials by burning, burying or discharging in water ways leading to local area contamination, serious health risks and environmental damage.
